Not sure how this copy got to Archive. But after all these years there is a high quality remaster of my original recording. Not sure how to remove this one, but it should be replaced with the newly upgraded copy. Any help or suggestions are welcome. Peace!

Subject: GREAT show
10/14/83 is a GREAT show. The first set seems very underwhelming on the surface, but does have a soulful character, ragged but right. The second set is flawless and stunning. But, I would say my favorite AUD recording of this show is the Steve Hill tape, which can be found in the source list for this show here in the Archive. Steve Hill's tape has both clarity and also a strong bottom end in the bass. All around a very lively recording, highly recommended you hear that one.

I think it is a rarity that Brent plays only B3 for every song in the first set. I enjoyed the change up on songs I think he usually plays tinkly piano keyboard sounds on: Big River, Tennesse Jed, They Love Each Other . . .
I haven't hunted down other examples but this is the first show I noticed the B3 on every song in Set 1 . . . any others?

An epic night, the Stephen next show is huge, but this night had the monster of a Scarlet Fire, and as i recall the Estimated Eyes kept up the pace, though after the drums dropped from an A+ to an A- by which I mean still awesome.

Subject: Best sounding source
The cut in Eyes is so painful because it comes right near the end of the last chorus. Having said that, there is only about 45 or so seconds missing. The last few minutes of drums and beginning of space is missing. For the most part,83 drums is no big deal. The whole Spanish Jam is complete. Having said that,I would still go with this source. The second best sounding is the Senn 421 Wise Miller source, if you want a more complete show.

Subject: GREAT (for the '80s)
i know i sound like a 60s/70s snob saying shit like that, but looking at the dead's career more objectively i personally think things went downhill after 1978. (although they did pick up again in '89-90, but i'll never be as big a fan of that period as 68-74). i know many will disagree, but that's just my too sense...
that said, there are still many little gems spread throughout the '80s, like THIS. wow, this is just one of those diamond in the rough shows, with a tremendous 2nd set...one of the all time scarlet>fires, as many have said, as well as great estimated>eyes.
and i can see why this aud could be preferred to the SBD on Dicks Picks 6 - the tone of jerry's guitar just seems to have a lot more life to it.

This was my first show, so I am biased. But after almost thirty years of listening to shows this one never fails to get me into a good mood.
While I was probably flying too high/too young/ too inexperienced to appreciate most of the show, it left me chasing that scarlet>fire transition.
I don't think I ever found anything as good, but the search was awesome.

Subject: Seriously?
Subject: Seriously?
What the user below is describing is the fact that this recording is out of phase. It may be decent but since it's out of phase, it sounds way off. It is also too loud. Probably from the transfer (cassette deck > CD burner > EAC). Scarlet's average loudness (RMS) is around -11db. Crank it all the way up on a half way decent stereo and you'll hear it immediately. I'm sure the taper and the folks involved with this recording did their best, I'm not knocking them at all.
On the other hand, you don't need any kind of special training to hear either of these problems, you just need a pair of ears.
What I'm wondering is why all of these 4 and 5 star reviews? I mean seriously folks, I've always thought of Heads as serious listeners but this is ridiculous
Try out the some of the other AUDs here, there's a new Wise Senn 421 source coming too.

Subject: polarity issue - confirmed
Just checked the SHN files and confirmed that the polarity is reversed on the right channel (after viewing the waveforms, the left channel is pushing positive on transients while the right is pushing negative). Easy to fix and makes a HUGE difference in output level, low-end and overall listening pleasure!

best ever of anything the Dead played...too many eras, periods, transitions....their evolution was such an ongoing beautiful experience for me that I just can't make comparisons. BUT after listening to the first set which was well played, bright and bouncy, full of energy I listened to the first 30 minutes of the second set and was magically transported to the heady vitamin A days of my time at Dead shows...I can't begin to explain the warm nostalgia and flowing imagery.
Scarlet/Fire was just magic in action...listening to the rest of the show with a big shit-eating grin on my face! Peace

Superb sounding audience tape with great 3D stereo sound and deep bass. It sounds like you are there! Awesome job by Ficca to bring this one to the world's ears. Good performance from the boys, too.
By the way, 7-29-88 "audience" recording sounds o.k. on the .mp3 stream, but when I downloaded the .shn files, it is a distorted mess. Dissapointing.

Subject: Frosty's Picks for the Hearing Impaired
I have major hearing problems. It’s called tinnitus and for those of you who don’t know it is a constant ringing in your ears. Therefore, it is hard for me to find audience shows that are of good enough quality for me to listen to without doing further damage to my hearing by having to turn up the volume past 5 to even tell what song is being played!! I am not saying anything about these shows except that as a person with major hearing lose, these are some of the shows that I have on my I-Pod. Of course some are better than others. However, I am not giving any of these shows a review. I can always find something good in every show…...as long as I can hear it!!!! Here is my list for today, 9/20/08:
7.6.84, 10.15.84, 6.19.91,

Please let me know if you have any show suggestions that compare to these in quality of sound.

This has got to be one of the best AUD recordings I've ever heard. The clarity is amazing. This taper knew what he was doing. Perfect sound for a phenomenal show.
Jerry is right on point in this show. The first set is good enough, but the second set is smoking hot. quite possibly the best Scarlet>Fire I've ever heard and the Space>Spanish Jam>Other One combo has some very inspired, and really intense moments. Definitely download this one.

This is a FANTASTIC show - wish I'd known what I was missing in '83 - but I was too young & dumb.
I already Have Dicks Picks 6 (this show), but I took a listen to this and I like this AUD better. The SBD on DP6 is a good recording, but it's not as full as the one these guys did and DP6 doesn't even come close to capturing the feel and energy that must have been there the way this recording does. Thanks to Ficca & Brennan and all the other tapers / masterers / etc for all of the work they put into recording and cleaning up shows to share!

Just caught the Spanish Jam>Other One while daydreaming. I must say, I really like the recording. Wish I was there. Too bad I was only in sixth grade at the time.
I must thank Jerome Garcia for all the inspiration he has provided for me over the years. The man was "Mozart" in disguise. He looked me in the eyes once before, and that was the last time I saw the man alive. Warfield, S.F. 1994, JGB. John Kahn was alive then too. I miss them both. Did some hard time for being noticed. It was worth it though.
Anyhow, Jerry's guitar is the "nebula." He taught me most of what I know about tuning in. Thankyou Jerry. I miss you man. I've got a lot more to learn...

This is one of those cases in which the AUD tape of a show is much preferable to the SBD (as released on DP6). The quality of the AUD is fantastic and very clear! Whoever taped it did an excellent job of mic placement and finding the right place in the hall to record.
I don't want to spoil the fun but the second set is just epic. The Scarlet>Fire is one of the best ever played, better than 5/8/77 in my opinion. The Eyes>Drums>Spanish jam>Other One is great but the Stella B. is fantastic; one of the all time great Stellas.

This show brings back great memories, unlike the following nights show that weekend in Hartford in 83. It was the best seats I ever had for a show. We were front row, me and 5 friends, about 15 feet in front of the band. Security was tight and there was plenty of room to move. The band opened up strong and gained momentum throughout. The show peaked at scarlet fire estimated eyes (68 minutes). They really came out in the second set and blew the roof off, especially during fire. Jerry just openly rips and the band s got his back. The quality of the recording is good and I'm now glad i can compare this show to the following night (that's another story). This show is the boys at there best in one of best years they had.
